Many troops were likely equipped with the gun.

Entire infantry units were equipped with the weapon, and by some estimates, 5 to 6 million PPSh-41s were produced during World War II. Many other Soviet troops also used the PPSh-41. It’s very functional but still ugly.įor me, the most vivid image of the Soviet PPSh-41 is of it in the hands of tank riders, the Soviet infantry who went into battle riding T-34s. Conversely, I consider its replacement, the PPS-43, one of the ugliest weapons I’ve ever used. It is the authoritative history of the Thompson gun in your country during World War II.Generally, I don’t think of Russian weapons as being elegant, but for some reason, the PPSh-41 has always struck me so while being utilitarian. To date, nothing in the book has been discredited. Every statement in my book is supported by a document written long ago, a recorded meeting or some other type irrefutable proof. It is one reason I footnoted every passage of information in my book. How what actually transpired with drums and box magazines morphed into what was printed in that article is but one of a long line of misinformed stories about the Thompson gun. Suffice to say the British were not allowed to cancel some existing contracts for drums and these drums were not shipped to Britain and ultimately destroyed. The British Purchasing Commission (BPC) was active in procurement and later MoS decision to abandon the drum magazine. I devote pages 55 to 60 in my book on the British procurement and use of drum and box magazines. After spending two years learning about the Thompson gun in Great Britain during World War II I would find this type of event inconceivable (but I have a very open mind if supplied the proper documentation). However, it does not matter as there is no documentation that I have seen or ever heard about that indicated the British Ministry of Supply (MoS) returned Thompson drums from Britain back to the USA. I agree with the reading of the last paragraph by Digger and azboater, above. This news article was discussed in depth in the below thread: Thanks for supplying the source information for your previous statement.
